THE STONE FORGE studio is a  recording and mastering studio located in the southwestern region of Germany.

Our primary focus is on rock, alternative, punk and metal productions, but we’ve also had the pleasure of collaborating with successful artists in the realms of techno and trip-hop.

In addition to our on-site recording and mixing capabilities, we are now proud to offer mastering services for international productions.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Today, over 90% of our mixing process takes place within digital audio workstations (DAWs). However, both before and after this digital journey, there’s an analog path – an analog recording chain followed by an analog mastering chain.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly simplifying the mixing process, but creative decisions will continue to be the domain of humans.

Working digitally offers efficiency and speed, but it's crucial to know where to infuse that essential touch of analog mojo.

We encourage you to question our actions ...because that's how we truly understand and meet your expectations

Some words about loudness

Perhaps you still remember the days of the „Loudness Wars“. It was a time when many productions focused solely on achieving maximum loudness for their mastered albums. Examples like Metallica’s ‚Death Magnetic‘ (-5/-6 LUFS) and Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ ‚Californication‘ come to mind. Even today, there are releases that push the boundaries of limiting and soft clipping – one of our current favorites being ‚Måneskin’s ‚Rush.‘

While artists cherish the physical presence of their music, the majority of music consumption now happens on streaming platforms. To ensure a consistent listening experience, streaming platforms normalize all songs to uniform loudness levels. Unfortunately, different platforms have varying loudness standards (-11 LUFS for Spotify Loud, -14 LUFS for Amazon Alexa, Spotify Normal, YouTube, and -16 LUFS for Apple). However, at THE STONE FORGE we always base our mastering decisions on the original material and the desired sonic character, not on streaming service volume requirements.

In the realm of Rock, Punk and Metal mastering, we often find ourselves aiming for a loudness level around -9 to -11 LUFS – competitive loudness with ample dynamics and a powerful presence….

… at THE STONE FORGE we trust our ears, not the numbers.

At THE STONE FORGE ...

… our mastering service is dedicated to ensuring absolute satisfaction for both our clients and ourselves.

If you’re not happy with the final result, we won’t charge you for it. On the flip side, we reserve the right to decline projects where we aren’t confident in the quality of the provided source material.

Transparent communication is the key to achieving satisfying outcomes for both the mastering engineer and the client.

Your contentment is our ultimate goal.

What`s your reference

Many clients provide a reference track alongside their mixdown, hoping that the final master will sound exactly the same. However, it’s important to understand that mastering serves a different purpose. It’s the finishing touch that brings out the best in your song, making the mix more cohesive, enhancing its presence and depth, and often adding that extra punch that makes it stand out.

Mastering, though, comes at the end of a production chain, typically based on a stereo mixdown or stem tracks. The majority of creative decisions are made during recording and mixing. Each track goes through a series of processes where numerous choices are made – instrument and amp selection, microphone choice and placement, compression and EQ adjustments, modulation and reverb effects, and positioning within the mix.

To get close to a reference track, all these decisions should already be in line with the reference during the recording and mixing stages. Even though it’s possible to match the frequency curve and dynamics of a reference track through mastering, keep in mind that every artist and signal chain is unique. Embrace your uniqueness. It’s your art, your song, and your sound. Let it evolve, and don’t feel constrained by the need to mimic others at the end of the process.

Some Customer reviews

Tom [Germany]

„The Stone Forge“ graciously declined my mix in a very considerate email. They pointed out critical frequencies in the mix and suggested to rework it before mastering. The result is fantastic.

Mael [France]

We were highly content with our self-recorded songs, except for the drum sound. „The Stone Forge“ offered to enhance and remix the sound with trigger sounds at a reasonable price. Now, it’s an absolute bombshell.

At The Stone Forge, you can sense at every moment that these folks grew up with Grunge, Punk, and Metal. You don’t need to explain your sound vision to them for long—they quickly grasp what you mean.

Within 24 hours, i received a master that left us 100% satisfied right away. They elevated our mixdown to a whole new level—more clarity, more warmth, and, most importantly, a powerful sound.
